Saturday Long Course Saturday Sprint Course
And New Women Only Sunday Sprint Course

We are pleased to announce the following NEW additions to our event:

NEW THIS YEAR!

For the first time in its 21 year history, the Santa Barbara Triathlon has partnered with the Dream Foundation in an effort to make dreams come true for terminally ill adults. As an interested participant in this year's race, you will receive our "Adopt a Dream" pledge packet. We hope you will consider competing not only for yourself or your team, but that you will join us in competing for the families who physically can't.

The Dream Foundation is the first and only national wish-granting organization for adults ages 18-65 who have been diagnosed with a life expectancy of one year or less. These adults are battling devastating illnesses such as cancer, MS or AIDS. Because the Foundation receives no state or federal funding. Therefore, they rely heavily on people like you for support.

The Santa Barbara Triathlon and the Dream Foundation hope you will seize this incredible opportunity to make a difference, and race to make a dream come true.

NEW THIS YEAR!

Beginning in 2002 - There will be a second race day featuring a Sprint Course for Women Only.  That's right - Sunday August 25th will be the first ever Santa Barbara Triathlon Woman's Sprint Course. In a time when many races are attempting to add bigger fields to accommodate the increasing demand for this popular sport, we are trying something NEW

With these exciting additions, Adventours Outdoor Excursions proudly presents the 21st Annual Santa Barbara County Triathlon (SBCT)!! In 1981, the first SBCT took place with 250 participants. In the years since, SBCT has experienced phenomenal growth and success. Triathletes are drawn to this event by the top-notch organization, beautiful courses and positive atmosphere.

As always, the traditional Saturday races are guaranteed to see a full field of 600 competitors in the Long Course and 330 in the Sprint Course.  The new Women Only Sprint Course on Sunday will also have a limit of 330.  Limiting the field in each race is just one reason the Santa Barbara Triathlon is renowned as one of the best multi-sport races in the country.

Santa Barbara, nestled between the Channel Islands and the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains, is a small cosmopolitan town filled with quaint shops and fine dining. Spanish-influenced architecture combined with an ideal climate and spacious beaches create the perfect vacation escape. Make your race weekend here a special one by experiencing all that Santa Barbara has to offer.

Bring your family and friends with you to the Sports Expo and Race Registration/Packet Pickup on Friday. You can stock-up on discounted Triathlete wear and accessories. Don't forget to visit the Santa Barbara Mission and catch the sunset from Stearns Wharf before retiring early in preparation for RACE DAY.

The SBCT fills up early-and completely-every year, so sign up today!

Long Course

Sprint Course
Both sprint races
Saturday & Sunday

This race is one of the most beautiful in the world. The course is known for its calm Pacific Ocean swim. Santa Barbara’s oceanfront is protected by the Channel Islands which lie just 15 to 20 miles off shore. The bike route leads you from the heart of Santa Barbara through the neighboring towns of Montecito and Carpinteria. If you’re watching where your going you’ll see some of the most exclusive neighborhoods and gorgeous mountainsides on the West Coast. You’ll also be wowed by the run course which incorporates the entire Santa Barbara oceanfront bike path, which leads you along seven miles of coastal views. As you cross the finish line you will be greeted by our volunteers and exuberant spectators welcoming you to the beach party. A mini version of the long course. The unique area provides a perfect backdrop for the full out sprint. Each year this race includes "sprint specialists" and dozens of first timers. The calm ocean swim, relatively flat bike and completely flat run make for a perfect PR or introduction to the sport of triathlon.

1 Mile Swim: The Pacific Ocean swim parallels the beach. The average water temperature is 64 degrees and wetsuits are recommended. 500 yard Swim: Quick and easy, the ocean swim parallels the beach. The average water temperature is 64 degrees. Wetsuits are optional but getting them off may negate any time advantages of wearing one.

34 Mile Bike
Obey all traffic laws
-
this is an open course. Safety is our first concern. This spectacular bike course starts and finishes with a flat and fast two mile straightaway. The middle section is somewhat technical and includes three mandatory stops (race officials and CHP officers at each stop); disqualifications will be strictly enforced. There will be a water bottle transfer at approximately mile 15.
6 Mile Bike
Obey all traffic laws – this is an open course. It's very fast, no hills (well, just one in front of the Four Seasons Biltmore). This out and back course goes so quickly there’s no time for water.

10 Mile Run: Most of the run is on a bike path. The rest is on residential streets that are open to traffic. Please obey traffic laws. There are a few awesome inclines but the route starts and finishes with a flat and fast two mile leg. There will be water stations at each mile. 2 Mile Run: One mile out, one mile back – it's that simple. You can get water at mile one if you dare to slow down.

Post Race
Party, Fun,
& Food
When you’re done with the race you’ll be sitting on one of California’s most active beaches. We’ll have music, lots of sport vendors and great food to get you through the day. Plan on hanging out and enjoying Santa Barbara. You might even decide to play a little volleyball at the more than twelve courts just a minute away.

Directions Cabrillo Bathhouse – 1118 Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara, CA
  • Take Highway 101 to Santa Barbara
  • Exit Milpas St. and head toward the beach.
Note: The northbound Hwy 101 Milpas Street exit dumps you into a roundabout. Take the Milpas South exit in the roundabout. (This will take you around the circle and back under the overpass.)
  • At Cabrillo Blvd when Milpas ends, turn left and proceed 1 block.
  • The race site and Sports Expo/Race Packet Pickup location is at Cabrillo Bathhouse on your right (beach side). The Radisson Hotel is across the street.
  • Please park away from working volunteers.

Sports Expo
and Race
Packet Pickup
Our Sports Expo and packet pickup will begin at 10am and close at 7pm on Friday August 23, 2002, at the Cabrillo Bathhouse. Prior to your race you are required to pick up your race packet. Come on out to the beach and meet our staff, have questions answered and check out some of the latest triathlon gear.

Your race packet contains your bib number, swim cap, t-shirt and other important information that you will need to review before your race. As a last resort you can get your race packet on race day beginning about 5:30am. For those racing Sunday - you can stop by between 9:00am and 12:00 noon on Saturday to pick up your race packet - or wait until Sunday morning at 5:30am.

Bring your Tri-Fed card to the packet pick-up (if you didn't pay the one-day fee with your application.) Tri-Fed requires all athletes to bring their membership card to Pre-Race Packet pick-up (even if you have already given us your membership number). This includes each team member. Failure to do so will result in a 1-day non-refundable fee of $7 for each individual. If you do not have a Tri-Fed card and did not include the one-day fee with your application we will ask you to pay it prior to getting your race packet.

Parking
& Road
Closures
Parking on race day can be difficult. Here are some tips to help you...

Road Closures: Cabrillo Blvd. between Hwy 101 and Milpas, will be closed for our event between 5:00am and 11:30am on race day. Northbound Hwy 101 traffic should not take the Cabrillo Blvd exit. Instead continue north and take the Garden Street exit. Head left towards the beach and park down there. Southbound Hwy 101 traffic should also take the Garden Street Exit.

This closure causes major traffic congestion at the intersection of Milpas and Cabrillo as traffic is detoured around the closures. Try to avoid this area during these times unless you really like sitting behind a lost tourist in a Winnebago for 20 minutes. You can avoid all this by using Garden Street to the west.

No Parking: Because of the race, there will be NO PARKING between 1:00am and noon Saturday and Sunday, August 24 & 25, 2002 at the following locations:

  • Cabrillo Blvd between Milpas and Channel Drive (East Beach Area).
  • The west Cabrillo Bathhouse parking lot (the transition area and race operations location)
  • Channel Drive eastbound (beach side) along Butterfly Beach in front of the Biltmore.
  • Olive Mill Rd between the Biltmore and Danielson Rd.
  • DO NOT PARK ON THE SOFTBALL FIELDS across the street from the Fess Parker Doubletree Hotel, or the fields by the zoo. You will be towed.

Gear Drop Off or Gear Pickup: Because of the road closures, there is no place to stop and drop off or pickup your race gear at the transition area. Don't bother wasting your time trying because the police will not allow you to stop. Just find a safe and legal place to park and hike it.

So... Where can I park? The is little to no parking at the race site, so plan on a short hike or bike ride to get there. We recommend that you park at the city beach lots near Cabrillo and Garden Street. Be prepared to pay up to $10 for a day's worth of parking.

Garden Street Beach Lots: Exit Hwy 101 at Garden St. Head towards the beach. On your right between the railroad tracks and Cabrillo Blvd are city parking lots. Once parked, ride your bike across Cabrillo Blvd to the bike path. Ride east on the bike path towards the Bath House Race Site, a tad over a mile away.

Cabrillo Blvd Beach Lots: Exit Hwy 101 at Garden St. Head towards the beach. Cross Cabrillo Blvd into a large parking lot on the beach side of Cabrillo. Once parked, ride your bike to the bike path between the parking lot and the sand. Ride east on the bike path towards the Bath House Race Site, which is just over a mile away.

Cabrillo Blvd Street Parking: You can park for free on Cabrillo Blvd. between Garden St and Milpas St. However, space is very limited and will fill up fast!

East Beach Area/Zoo Area Parking: You can park for free on the surface streets behind the East Beach hotels (Radisson, etc.), the Zoo, and the softball fields. These are across the street from the race site. However, this too will fill up fast if it is not already full from normal tourist traffic. Take the Milpas St. exit, head towards the ocean, turn left at Calle Puerto Vallarta, and hunt for a street parking place.

Warning! DO NOT PARK ON THE SOFTBALL FIELDS! You will be towed.

Bath House Parking Lot: The West lot at the Bath House is open Friday and Saturday. However, the city will charge you, it is very small and will fill up, and you may have trouble getting out before noon because the race will still be going on.
